Treasured Heirlooms
Treasured Heirlooms
I made my first quilt at the age of 21, however it wasn’t until 10 years ago that I fell in love with the craft. I LOVE everything about quilts from exploring patterns, fabrics, quilting designs and snuggling under them. I have made over 30 quilts for friends and family members and enjoy customizing them to suit each person. Giving a quilt not only warms their physical bodies but their hearts as well. When you chose a quilt already made or a custom design, quilts are truly gifts of comfort, warmth and beauty. Every fabric and pattern choice creates an original piece of art that I hope will become a treasured heirloom. When cuddling under a handmade quilt to watch T.V. or read books, you can’t help but feel relaxed and content.
Now that I have retired, the time is right to open my own online quilt shop. Every quilt I make is unique and handmade in my sewing room on a domestic sewing machine. All aspects of the quilt making, from cutting the fabric, sewing the blocks, quilting and binding each quilt are done by me. The quilt does not leave my smoke free home until it gets shipped out to the customer. I use quality quilting cottons, thread and battings. Each quilt takes many hours to create. The Butterfly quilt pictured on this page took about 80 hours to quilt out all the details. It also takes time to pick out fabrics, cut and sew the fabric together. In fact, I name each one as they take a lot of my creative energy. Due to the many hours it takes to create each quilt, I have a very limited supply. There truly is love in every stitch.
Embracing the Art of Quilting from My Ancestors
Embracing the Art of Quilting from My Ancestors
Quilting is in my blood. My grandmother and great aunts were all quilters. They quilted for practical purposes and used every scrap of fabric available. Quilters are natural re-users and recyclers. We like to use up all the fabric saving the tiniest scraps are saved to be used in other projects. The mattress cover on my childhood bed and the table protector for our inherited dining room table were made with cotton cloth from flour and sugar sacks made by my ancestors. Its amazing to think that the quilts have survived them by 60 plus years. I think today they would be as excited as I am about creating with all the beautiful and affordable fabrics available today.

The wonderful ladies in my lineage also inspired my re-useable Bee-Kind Kitchen Cloths. They were dairy farmers and good stewards of the earth. They were deeply connected to the land and the animals in their care. They used and reused everything they had. Cotton and Linen fabrics were what were readily available to them. These fabrics are highly absorbent and great for cleaning a variety of surfaces. My own mother used our old flannel diapers to dust and clean our house. Both cotton and Linen Fabrics are biodegradable and can be composted. These fabrics are much better for the earth than plastic based micro-fibre clothes that take years to decompose. It was wisdom from my ancestors that helped me create the Bee-Kind Cloths. Named because in using them we are kind to the Earth and kind to ourselves by reducing chemical use in our homes.
